Merit is what we have done — whether through giving (dana), virtue (sila), or meditation (bhavana) — and it gathers together as a clear, luminous sphere of merit residing at the center of the body. We should recollect this merit, keep recollecting it again and again, so that merit can overcome evil and unwholesome deeds. Evil and unwholesome deeds, on the other hand, bring us the opposite result — obstacles in life.
Therefore we should recollect the clear, luminous sphere of merit residing at the center of the body until it becomes a habit, and let it be the starting point from which we stop the mind and connect with the center of the body, the Seventh Base. And when the mind becomes still, soft, light, and at ease, it will move inward.
Recollecting merit frequently prevents evil from gaining a foothold, and it fills our mind with joy (piti), happiness, gladness, and pride in the times past when we used everything we had for creating merit and doing good deeds.
Moreover, readiness is extremely hard to find in this human world. Do not wait for readiness before acting; readiness lies in our acting continuously.
