In every meditation practice, we encounter five hindrances that can obscure the mind and prevent deep insight. These five hindrances (nivaranas) are:
- Kāmacchanda (sensual desire) — Desire for sense objects, wanting to see, hear, taste, touch beautiful things
- Vyāpāda (ill-will) — Anger, irritation, resentment toward others or conditions
- Thīna-middha (sloth-torpor) — Sluggishness, drowsiness, mental dullness
- Uddhacca-kukkucca (restlessness-worry) — Restlessness, anxiety, regret, guilt
- Michchitta-ditthi (wrong view/doubt) — Doubt in the practice, skepticism about the path
Luang Por Dhammajayo teaches that recognizing these hindrances is the first step. When we understand them clearly, we can use the method of stopping the mind at the center of the body, the Seventh Base, to allow the sphere of paṭhamamagga to arise. Then with reason and principle, we must get, must see, must be — free from these mental fermentations.
