Executive Summary: Torturing Prisoners Karma

A chilling karmic case study from the Dream in Dream Kindergarten Wisdom School, taught by Ven. Luang Por Dhammajayo. This account exposes the dark karma of abusing authority—specifically, wardens or guards who torture, beat, and bully prisoners. This cruel abuse of power guarantees a future of physical paralysis, wrongful imprisonment, and agonizing confinement in the Hell Realms.

1. Power Behind Bars and the Loss of Humanity

Individuals in professions that involve guarding or controlling prisoners sometimes lose their compassion and become intoxicated by absolute power. They may inflict unnecessary physical or mental abuse on those stripped of their freedom—beating them for confessions, torturing them for extortion, or locking them in dark solitary confinement simply for sadistic pleasure.

Even though the prisoners may have committed crimes, punishing them beyond the law or abusing them out of malice is a severe violation of the First Precept (Panatipata – harming life). The abuser essentially allows cruelty to consume their own mind, forging a heavy karmic chain.

2. The Karmic Retribution of the Cruel Warden

Those who habitually torture and bully the defenseless will face severe retribution related to confinement and agony:

  • Imprisonment and Paralysis: In this lifetime or the next, they are highly likely to be framed and wrongly imprisoned themselves. Alternatively, the karma manifests physically as severe strokes or paralysis, leaving them bedridden and entirely dependent on others—effectively trapped in the “prison” of their own malfunctioning body.
  • The Hell of Confinement: Upon death, their astral body is seized by hell-wardens. They are locked inside a microscopic, red-hot iron cage in the Yamaloka (Hell Realm) where they cannot move a single inch. They are then whipped, beaten, and tortured using the exact same methods they employed on their prisoners, but the pain is magnified millions of times.
  • Rebirth as a Caged Animal: When they finally escape hell, the residual karma dictates that they be reborn as animals doomed to spend their entire lives in cramped cages (such as neglected zoo animals or caged birds), suffering from severe claustrophobia and depression until death.

3. Theravada Canonical Tipitaka References

The Buddha strongly advised against using violence or torture, regardless of the victim’s status, as karma does not discriminate:

Dhammapada (Danda Vagga)

“He who, seeking his own happiness, punishes or kills beings who also long for happiness, will not find happiness after death… He who does not harm others will find true happiness.”

4. Spiritual Solutions and Mitigation

For those who have previously abused their power as guards or have tortured others, Luang Por Dhammajayo advised an urgent path to mitigate this heavy karma:

  1. Immediate Reform: If still in the profession, perform your duties strictly according to the rules, with justice and underlying compassion. Never use torture, extortion, or emotional abuse.
  2. Liberate Animals: Frequently participate in merit-making by releasing captive animals (birds, fish, or cattle destined for slaughter). Giving the gift of freedom directly counteracts the karma of wrongful confinement.
  3. Dedicate Merit and Seek Pardon: Practice deep meditation daily. Radiate loving-kindness and dedicate the merit specifically to the prisoners or subordinates you tortured. Sincerely beg for their karmic pardon (Ahosi Kamma) to unlock the heavy karmic chains binding your future.
