From the teaching series \”Inner Dreams Kindergarten\” by Luang Por Dhammajayo (Wat Phra Dhammakaya) — Exploring the profound reality of human existence through real-life case studies on the Law of Karma.
1. The Background: Dark Figures at the Bedside and Terror at the Final Breath
This striking case study provides an indelible exploration of the final threshold of human mortality. The subject was a middle-aged man who lived a largely reckless and heedless worldly life—indulging heavily in alcohol, frequent gambling, and showing zero interest in spiritual practice or charitable deeds. In his late maturity, he was struck down by a catastrophic, terminal illness, confined to an intensive care unit (ICU).
In his final days of consciousness, extreme nocturnal terrors overwhelmed him. Awaking abruptly in sheer panic, his eyes bulged with terror as he pointed trembling fingers toward the foot of the bed and screamed: \”Help me! They are surrounding my bed—colossal, dark-skinned figures wearing red loincloths, holding iron chains and heavy rods! They say my time is up and they have come to drag me away!\” Despite desperate efforts by relatives to comfort him, chant Buddhist verses, or display Buddha images, his clouded mind could not anchor onto wholesome thoughts. His vital signs abruptly collapsed amid an expression of paralyzed horror. Grieving and shaken, his family consulted Luang Por Dhammajayo to understand the reality of this terrifying transition.
2. Luang Por’s Insight: Netherworld Messengers and the Inevitable Lifespan Expiration
Luang Por Dhammajayo verified through spiritual vision that the dark entities observed were authentic officers from the Netherworld (Yama-Duta) executing their duty under cosmic law:
\”The colossal dark-skinned figures wearing red loincloths observed by the dying man were genuine Netherworld Officers (Yama-Duta) from the First Heaven of Catummaharajika, not chemical hallucinations. When a person lives heedlessly, accumulating heavy unwholesome demerits without sufficient merit, the dying process is dominated by ‘Dark Karmic Signs’ (Kamma-Nimitta). The unwholesome deeds of a lifetime—slaughter, drunkenness, deceit—replay vividly like a terrifying film. Netherworld officers arrive armed with chains to secure the subtle body upon the exact second of expiration. The subtle consciousness is forcefully extracted from the physical vessel and marched across dimensional thresholds to the Judgment Hall of King Yama in the netherworld. In that fateful instant, all worldly wealth, prestige, and high-tech medical machinery become utterly powerless to delay death by even a millisecond.\”
The metaphysical realities of the final transition unfold as follows:
- The Arrival of Netherworld Wardens: Signals an impending descent into subterranean judgment, precipitated by unwholesome mental states at the time of death.
- The Weight of Kamma-Nimitta: Unwholesome memories dominate consciousness, preventing the dying person from anchoring awareness on peace or virtue.
- The Absolute Finality of Lifespan: Death respects neither wealth nor social rank; every individual must journey alone to face the impartial harvest of their deeds.
3. Key Spiritual Lessons for Mindful Living and Dying
This case delivers vital spiritual guidance on preparing for the inevitable departure:
- Practice Mindfulness of Death Daily (Marananussati): Constantly reflect on the impermanence of life. Prior to sleep, center awareness at the Seventh Base of the body (the center of the torso), reviewing wholesome deeds to maintain a tranquil, luminous state.
- Accumulate Continuous Wholesome Habits (Acinna-Kamma): Practice daily charity, maintain ethical precepts, and cultivate meditation so that positive spiritual impressions naturally flood consciousness at life’s final threshold, attracting celestial chariots rather than netherworld wardens.
- Guide the Dying Toward Wholesome Memories: Family members attending terminal patients should gently remind them of their past good deeds, display Buddha images, and recite serene chants to support mental clarity.
Canonical Tipitaka References
- Devaduta Sutta, Majjhima Nikaya (MN 130): The Buddha’s canonical discourse detailing King Yama’s judgment hall and the celestial messengers that warn mortals of impermanence, sickness, old age, and punishment in hell.
- Maranassati Sutta, Anguttara Nikaya (AN 8.74): The Buddha taught that mindfulness of death, when cultivated and frequently practiced, yields immense fruit, culminating in deathlessness (Nibbana).
