From the teaching series \”Inner Dreams Kindergarten\” by Luang Por Dhammajayo (Wat Phra Dhammakaya) — Exploring the profound reality of human existence through real-life case studies on the Law of Karma.

1. The Background: Razor-Sharp Speech and a Destitute, Unclaimed Demise

This cautionary case study explores the terrifying karmic rebound of verbal misconduct (Vaci-Kamma). The subject was an elderly man who, during his productive years, earned a comfortable middle-class livelihood as a merchant. However, his fatal character flaw was an intensely abusive, sharp-tongued temperament. He routinely humiliated, mocked, and verbally assaulted those around him—belittling his wife, children, siblings, and neighbors with cruel profanities. Whenever enraged, he hurled vicious death wishes, frequently cursing others: \”May you die ruined, with no one to cremate your corpse, without even a coin to buy a wooden coffin!\”

As he aged, the karmic boomerang struck with devastating precision. Alienated by his relentless verbal cruelty, his wife and children abandoned the home and severed all ties. His financial savings were swindled by unscrupulous acquaintances and drained by medical bills. He spent his final days bedridden in a dilapidated rental room. When he passed away in complete isolation, not a single relative claimed his remains, nor was there a single baht left for funeral expenses. A charitable foundation eventually cremated his body in an unmarked pauper’s grave. Perplexed by this tragic end, his distant nephew consulted Luang Por Dhammajayo: How could an industrious man suffer such an utterly destitute and abandoned death?

2. Luang Por’s Insight: The Axe in the Mouth and Netherworld Retribution for Harsh Speech

Luang Por Dhammajayo explained through meditative insight that destructive curses and verbal cruelty inexorably rebound upon the speaker:

“Dying in total abandonment without funds for one’s own cremation is the direct ripening of ‘Severe Verbal Demerit (Vaci-Duccarita)’ accumulated across past lives and this lifetime. Malicious speech, sarcastic mockery, and habitual curses wishing destitute death upon others act like an axe born within the mouth, severing the speaker’s own social support networks and destroying accumulated financial blessings. The exact words he uttered—wishing others to die without a coffin—became his own karmic blueprint. Upon physical death, his subtle consciousness plunged into the Netherworld (Yama-Loka). There, netherworld officers used searing red-hot iron pliers to yank out his tongue to immense lengths, dragging it across blistering iron sheets while hacking and slicing it into pieces with molten razor blades and axes, forcing him to experience excruciating agony corresponding to the verbal wounds he inflicted on others.”

The spiritual mechanics of verbal karma are categorized as follows:

  • Destruction of Companionship: Verbal cruelty drives away wholesome mentors and loyal family members, ensuring an isolated, helpless old age.
  • The Boomerang of Curses: Malicious deathbed curses and profanities rebound entirely upon the person who uttered them.
  • Netherworld Retribution: Denizens with severe verbal offenses endure relentless tongue-mutilation and burning in netherworld judgment courts.

3. Key Spiritual Lessons for Mindful Communication

This case delivers essential moral guidance on guarding the power of speech:

  1. Guard the Four Modes of Verbal Conduct: Strictly abstain from lying, divisive speech, harsh profanity, and frivolous chatter. Cultivate gentle, truthful, affectionate, and beneficial speech (Piya-Vaca).
  2. Revoke Past Curses and Seek Pardon: If one has ever cursed or spoken cruelly to others, sincerely repent before the Buddha image, mentally request mutual pardon (Ahosikamma), and actively revoke all negative words.
  3. Donate Coffins and Support Pauper Burials: Sponsor coffins, burial shrouds, and funeral expenses for destitute, unclaimed corpses. This meritorious charity dissolves karmic isolation and ensures dignified care and protection in life and death.

Canonical Tipitaka References

  • Kokalika Sutta, Samyutta Nikaya (SN 6.10): The Buddha proclaimed: \”Purisassa hi jātassa, kuṭhārī jāyate mukhe\” — \”When a man is born, an axe is born inside his mouth. A fool cuts himself with it when uttering malicious speech, leading himself straight to hell.\”
  • Petavatthu, Khuddaka Nikaya (Pv 98): Canonical accounts of Petas (hungry ghosts) possessing radiant golden bodies but putrid, worm-infested mouths resulting from past-life verbal insults and slander against virtuous beings.
