EP.26 : The Mind’s Path: All 7 Bases
Let us review the principle of wisdom that our most venerable Luang Pu of Wat Paknam, Bhasicharoen, taught and instructed: the path of the mind has altogether 7 bases.
Base 1 is at the nasal opening; for women on the left side, for men on the right side.
Base 2 is at the eye sockets, at the position where tears flow; for women on the left side, for men on the right side.
Base 3 is in the center of the crown of the head, at the same level as our eyes.
Base 4 is at the palate, the mouth opening where food is swallowed.
Base 5 is at the opening of the throat, above the Adam’s apple.
Base 6 is in the middle of the abdomen, at the same level as our navel. Imagine taking two threads and stretching them tight: one from the navel through to the back, another from the right side through to the left. Let the two threads cross each other in the form of an X; at the point of crossing, as small as the tip of a needle, that is Base 6.
Base 7 is located two finger-widths above Base 6. By placing your index and middle fingers together and laying them upon the crossing point of the two threads, two finger-widths higher is called the center of the body, Base 7, which is the true resting place of our mind.
From Base 1 to Base 6 is the path of the mind, but the true resting place of the mind is Base 7. We must bring our mind to become still at Base 7 at all times. We will see Base 7 clearly only when the mind has become completely and perfectly still, one hundred percent. But now we are still new practitioners, our mind is not yet still, so let us imagine it to be in the middle of the abdomen, at the level two finger-widths above the navel, or to remember simply that it is in the middle of our abdomen. Base 7 requires only that we know it is here — it is not for groping about to find where it is, no. Imagine it to be in the middle of the abdomen, at the position where we feel comfortable, and we are satisfied to place our mind there.
This is the principle of wisdom that he taught for us to review, in order to bring our mind to become still at Base 7, or in the middle of the abdomen at the position where we are confident this is Base 7. Bring the mind to rest still here, practicing diligently and correctly according to the principle of wisdom, consistently every day and every night, and we will attain true happiness.
