Merit as a supportive force in life and practice

Merit is not limited to giving material things. It also includes keeping ethical conduct, helping others, speaking well, cultivating wholesome intentions, and developing the mind through meditation. When good causes are accumulated consistently, the mind can become lighter, clearer, and more ready to continue doing good.

Merit should not be viewed only as something done in exchange for worldly results. It is also a way of developing the quality of the person who makes the merit. As the mind improves, decisions, work, and relationships can be guided by greater care and clarity.

Create good causes

  • Do good without harming others.
  • Practice integrity and ethical conduct.
  • Develop awareness and inner calm.
  • Make merit with a light heart rather than demanding immediate results.

Sustainable happiness and success begin with wholesome causes. When the causes are cultivated well, their results can gradually mature according to the strength of that cultivation.
