Some days you do not dislike your life at all. You simply open your phone, see someone buying a home, building a career, starting over, or moving forward with confidence, and suddenly you wonder, “What about me? Why am I still here?”
Comparison is easy because we see other people’s visible milestones while living through every uncertain step of our own lives. We may compare our hardest season with someone else’s best-looking moment.
The Real Problem: You May Not Be Behind. You May Be Walking a Different Path.
Life does not have one finish line for everyone. One person may be building stability. Another may be caring for family. Someone else may be recovering from a mistake, while another person is discovering that the old path no longer fits.
If you only measure your speed against other people, you cannot see the conditions that make your path different. Being slower does not automatically mean failure, and being ahead of someone else does not automatically make a life more meaningful.
A Dhamma Perspective: Look at the Causes and Conditions of Your Own Life
Dhamma invites us to see life through causes and conditions rather than judging ourselves through comparison. Thoughts, feelings, and circumstances change. The more useful question is not how to make our life look like someone else’s, but what wholesome cause we can create today.
When you notice comparison, you do not need to attack yourself. Simply recognize, “I am comparing myself right now,” and gently return to what is within your responsibility.
What You Can Do: Change “How Far Ahead Are They?” to “What Is My Next Step?”
- Pause whatever is triggering comparison and take a few mindful breaths.
- Ask, “What value do I see in their life that I genuinely want to cultivate in mine?”
- Choose one small action that reflects that value: learn something, contact someone you love, or finish one unfinished task.
- When someone else is doing well, practice saying, “They have their path, and I have mine.”
One Good Thing Today
For one day, stop competing with everyone. Choose one small thing that makes your own life a little better and do it. You do not need to post it, announce it, or compare the result with anyone else.
Sometimes the most important progress is simply finding your way back to your own life.
Come Back Tomorrow
If you compare yourself again tomorrow, that is okay. Come back again. You do not have to defeat anyone. You only need to stay with your own path.
Your life may not be moving at the fastest speed, and it may not look the way you once planned. But as long as you keep choosing steps toward what matters, the path is still yours.
