In every life’s journey, we encounter various experiences — some are pleasant, some are challenging, and some may cause us to feel discouraged or hesitant. The Evil One (Māra) uses these moments to make us doubt our progress, to make us want to give up, or to make us indifferent toward our spiritual practice. But the Buddha’s teaching is clear: we must not yield to discouragement, nor be complacent in the face of pleasant experiences.
When the mind faces difficulty, we must remember to maintain our determination. When the mind faces success or comfort, we must remember to remain mindful and not become arrogant. The middle way is to remain steady, neither too tight nor too loose, in every situation.
