EP.23 : How to Practice Dhamma

Practicing Dhamma has 3 main difficulties. The first is bringing the mind back to rest at the center of the body — because we are used to sending the mind outward, to cling to people, animals, and things, whether living or non-living. The second is desire: because we know that reaching it is good and wondrous, that it brings happiness and lets us become marvelous human beings who know the true story of life, and because we have heard so much, we want it a great deal. Wanting a lot is no problem — but it becomes too much when we bring that wanting into our sitting. Wanting should be used at the beginning, when we willingly undertake to practice; but while sitting we must stop the wanting, and that is why stopping the mind becomes difficult. If we instead begin with ease and happiness — simply making ourselves feel that there is a clear sphere, a clear crystal Buddha, within — just the feeling that it “exists” inside us, without actually seeing it. We begin by feeling there is a crystal sphere, a crystal Buddha, inside, reducing excessive effort and pressing the eyeballs to look. Because we are used to seeing with the eyeballs, we misunderstand and think we are seeing inside, and feel we must use the eyeballs to look down. That is where it is difficult.
