From the teaching series \”Inner Dreams Kindergarten\” by Luang Por Dhammajayo (Wat Phra Dhammakaya) — Exploring the profound reality of human existence through real-life case studies on the Law of Karma.

1. The Background: Mysterious Nightly Suffocation and the Feeling of a Crushed Chest

The subject of this intriguing case study suffered from terrifying nocturnal afflictions. Whenever they lay down to sleep, they experienced severe chest tightness, acute breathlessness, and total physical paralysis. Most alarmingly, they felt an overwhelming visceral sensation—as if a colossal dark figure or massive boulder was forcefully standing and stomping upon their chest, crushing the ribcage and leaving them gasping for air (commonly described colloquially as sleep paralysis or “ghost oppression”).

Furthermore, during daily life, they frequently experienced sharp thoracic twinges, unexplained fatigue, and constant chest constriction. Thorough medical evaluations by cardiologists and pulmonologists, including electrocardiograms and pulmonary imaging, revealed no physiological abnormalities. Baffled by their symptoms, they consulted Luang Por Dhammajayo: Was this the result of malevolent spirits, sorcery, or specific past karmic retributions?

2. Luang Por’s Insight: The Convergence of Dual Past Karmas

Luang Por Dhammajayo examined the phenomenon through spiritual vision, clarifying that the condition was neither supernatural occultism nor demonic harassment, but rather the simultaneous convergence of two past unwholesome deeds:

“This severe sensation of having the chest crushed is caused by the confluence of two distinct karmic streams: First, in a past life, this individual served as an authoritarian soldier or enforcement officer. When apprehending enemy captives or criminal suspects, they routinely used physical brutality—pinning captives to the ground and stomping their combat boots onto the prisoners’ chests, suffocating and terrorizing them into forced confessions. Second, in another lifetime, they engaged in animal husbandry where they trapped livestock in cramped cages and placed heavy weights on top of them, or forcefully pinned down animals’ chests while preparing them for slaughter. When these two distinct karmas—oppressing human captives and crushing animals—ripened simultaneously in this life, they manifested as severe nocturnal chest compression, respiratory blockage, and the intense sensation of an immense entity crushing their torso.”

The karmic convergence reveals three key dimensions:

  • Stomping on Human Captives’ Chests: Created psychological terror, sleep paralysis, and the sensation of being trampled during sleep.
  • Crushing and Confining Animals: Generated chronic thoracic nerve pain and breathlessness during waking hours.
  • Chanting and Generosity Merits: Maintained sufficient awareness to mentally invoke the Triple Gem, breaking the trance and preserving physical life.

3. Key Spiritual Lessons for Practitioners

This case study imparts essential ethical reflections on the use of power and compassion:

  1. Never Abuse Power to Oppress Others: In any professional or personal capacity, treat subordinates and adversaries with dignity. Never crush or humiliate vulnerable people, as unwholesome oppression inevitably boomerangs onto oneself.
  2. Sponsor Respiratory Medical Equipment: Donate oxygen tanks, ventilators, and respiratory medications to charitable hospitals. Facilitating the breath of others generates protective merit that relieves chest congestion and bodily oppression.
  3. Cultivate Evening Mindfulness and Center the Mind: Prior to sleep, recite sacred chants, radiate loving-kindness (Metta) to all beings, and gently settle awareness at the Seventh Base of the body (the center of the torso). Resting peacefully within the inner refuge insulates the psyche from night terrors and sleep paralysis.

Canonical Tipitaka References

  • Mahanaradakassapa Jataka, Khuddaka Nikaya (Jat 544): The Bodhisatta described the karmic consequences awaiting ruthless tyrants who oppress and crush the weak, revealing that they suffer in purgatory beneath blistering molten boulders crushing their chests.
  • Nidana Vagga, Samyutta Nikaya (SN 12.25): The Buddha taught that intentions performed by body, speech, and mind do not vanish into oblivion; when corresponding conditions mature, they materialize as exact physical and mental sensations corresponding to the original actions.

Easy but Deep EP.27: The Deceived Life — a teaching of Luang Por Dhammajayo, Wat Phra Dhammakaya that we must take the fully enlightened one as our standard, not those who do not truly know. Humans often believe the ignorant rather than the enlightened, and so our life is filled with suffering, molded by media to believe that sensory pleasures are happiness. But we can attain true happiness by stopping and being still, through the power of diligence and wisdom, seeking the Triple Gem within ourselves which leads to realizing Nibbana.
